AI research with social impact: Rhineland-Palatinate in future technologies around 6G

15.02.2026

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate is funding a pioneering research project by the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). The goal is to advance innovative AI applications in the field of mobile communication and to strengthen their transfer into business, science, and society.

In the Mainline-6G project, the DFKI is developing intelligent, AI-supported communication solutions as the foundation for future 6G networks. The funding will be used to research new approaches that link data, sensor technology, and artificial intelligence in real time.

These technologies create the basis for powerful, secure, and energy-efficient communication infrastructures—a decisive factor for applications such as autonomous driving, networked industrial processes, smart cities, and digital business models. This opens up new potential for innovation and value creation for companies.

Impetus for innovation, transfer, and social benefit

With this funding, Rhineland-Palatinate underlines the strategic importance of artificial intelligence as a key technology. The projects combine excellent research with concrete application fields and create important bridges between science, business, and society.

At the same time, the Rhineland-Palatinate research and innovation hub is being strengthened, and the DFKI is being further expanded as an internationally leading institution in the field of applied AI.
