Open6GHub+: Germany’s 6G Research Powers Industry
15.02.2026
With the launch of Open6GHub+, a new national 6G transfer hub is being established in Germany, consistently transforming the results of cutting-edge research on the next generation of mobile communications into industrial applications, standards, and markets. Open6GHub+ thus closes the gap between scientific 6G research and its impact on business and society – with a strong focus on transfer, implementation, and commercialization.
Bridge between Research and Application
Open6GHub+ is funded by the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and is a central element of Germany’s 6G strategy. The goal is to position Germany as a leading market and leading provider for the next generation of mobile communications. To achieve this, the transfer hub works closely with industrial companies, start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), authorities, and other stakeholders to bring 6G technologies into real-world applications more quickly.
A special focus of Open6GHub+ is on integrating Artificial Intelligence into 6G networks: The consortium develops AI-based network functions and uses generative and hybrid AI approaches to design, implement, and prepare new mobile communication technologies more quickly. Additionally, AI-supported digital twins of networks and applications are being created, allowing new services to be tested and optimized before real-world deployment.
Innovative 3D Network and Resilient Network Operation
Open6GHub+ also researches the networking of terrestrial networks with drones and non-terrestrial platforms to form so-called 3D networks. These are intended to enable ubiquitous, resilient connectivity – even where classic mobile networks reach their limits, such as in agriculture, logistics, or critical infrastructures. Furthermore, the project is working on foundations for intelligent 6G modems “Made in Europe” as well as autonomous 6G sub-networks with high demands on security, stability, and trustworthiness.
Strong Consortium and Clear Transfer Orientation
The Open6GHub+ consortium unites leading research institutions in communication technology, AI, and system integration: in addition to the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), also universities such as Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), TU Darmstadt, RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau, Universität Bremen, and Universität Stuttgart.
