Technical University of Berlin

The Chair of Next Generation Networks (AV) was founded in April 2004 as an endowed professorship of the Fraunhofer Society with the appointment of Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Thomas Magedanz. The chair is part of the Institute for Telecommunication Systems in Faculty IV – Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at the Technical University of Berlin and works closely with the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS in research.

In research and teaching, the chair focuses on the control and management of convergent open telecommunication environments, which have driven academic and industrial research in recent years under the topics of Next Generation Networks and Future Internet. The main focus is on the virtualization of network functions in software-based networks, which has already been applied in the control and service platforms of 4G/LTE networks and now represents a central architectural foundation in 5G networks. In particular, the focus is on the dynamic orchestration of network functions for the provision of application-specific 5G networks—so-called private / campus networks—and the optimization of the placement and grouping of network functions, especially for multimedia and Industrial IoT applications.
