Technical University of Berlin

The specialist area architectures of switching nodes (AV) was founded by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Thomas Magedanz in April 2004 as a professorship endowed by the Fraunhofer Society. The department is part of the Institute for Telecommunications Systems in Faculty IV – Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at the Technical University of Berlin and works closely with the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS in research.

In research and teaching, the department focuses on the topics of control and management of convergent open telecommunications environments, which have had an impact on academic and industrial research in recent years in the areas of Next Generation Networks and Future Internet. The main focus is on the virtualization of network functions in software-based networks, which has already been used in the control and service platforms of 4G/LTE networks and is now a central architectural foundation in 5G networks. The central point focuses on dynamic orchestration of network functions for the provision of application-specific 5G networks – so-called private / campus networks – and the optimization of the placement and grouping of network functions, especially for multimedia and industrial IoT applications.
